SMILE

A revolutionising e-Mental healthcare platform for the growing population suffering from depression

May 2019 Apr 2022

Background

A striking 25% of the EU population suffers from mental health problems. The yearly economic burden of €118B is continually increasing due to high relapse rates and complexity of complaints. Novel healthcare strategies will need to tackle this. Recent innovations in eHealth such as artificial intelligence and emotion recognition from text, audio and video make it possible to develop new standards in mental care. Self-assessment and monitoring tools combined with professional help have the potential to help more patients at reduced cost and time.

Objective

The consortium will develop the next level digital mental health platform. Innovative automated tools to monitor, analyse and predict emotional states will allow continuous recognition of warning signs of depression through media streams. Analysis is translated into effective guided self-help and coupled to real-time personalised support by therapists. The SMILE platform will increase therapy efficiency and reduce the steeply rising healthcare costs for patients with depression.
